He did not stay very long,\u00a0<strong>but he is often known as the first bishop of Antioch.<\/strong>\u00a0After that he may have visited Corinth before heading to Rome. There he helped form the Christian community and\u00a0<strong>was ultimately martyred in the Circus of Nero around 64 AD in Rome.<\/strong>\u00a0Saint Peter\u2019s Basilica in the Vatican is built on top of St. Peter\u2019s tomb.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Andrew<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>After Pentecost many ancient traditions point to Andrew, Peter\u2019s brother, as\u00a0<strong>the Apostle to the Greeks.<\/strong>\u00a0It is believed that he preached to Greek communities and was\u00a0<strong>martyred at Patras<\/strong>\u00a0on a cross in the shape of an X. His relics were eventually transferred to the Duomo Cathedral in Amalfi, Italy.<\/p>\n<h3><b>James the Great<br \/>\n<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><strong>It is held that James was the first apostle to be martyred.<\/strong>\u00a0In the Acts of the Apostles it reads, \u201cHerod the king laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword\u201d (Acts 12:1-2).<strong>\u00a0He died in 44 AD in Jerusalem, but his tomb is nowhere near this location.<\/strong>\u00a0After his death his body was transferred to Spain and is currently located in Santiago de Compostela. His tomb is the destination point of the centuries-old pilgrimage, El Camino, still popular today.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>John<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The author of the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation,\u00a0<strong>John was the only apostle not to have a martyr\u2019s death.<\/strong> In Revelation he writes from the island of Patmos, Greece, \u201cI John, your brother, who share with you in Jesus the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus\u201d (Revelation 1:9). He died around 100 AD and is buried near Ephesus.<span class=\"bkreadmore\"><span class=\"text-container-with-image\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Philip<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In the years following Pentecost,\u00a0<strong>Philip ministered to Greek-speaking communities.<\/strong>\u00a0Little is known about his adventures, except that\u00a0<strong>he was martyred around 80 AD.<\/strong>\u00a0His relics are located in the Basilica Santi Apostoli, in Rome.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Bartholomew<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"css-1q1joro\">Little is known regarding the evangelization efforts of Bartholomew. Various traditions have him preaching in different areas.\u00a0<strong>It is believed that he was martyred<\/strong>\u00a0and his remains are currently located at the church of St. Bartholomew-in-the-Island, in Rome.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Thomas<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The \u201cdoubting\u201d apostle,\u00a0<strong>Thomas is widely known for his missionary efforts in India.<\/strong>\u00a0There is a popular story about one of his adventures that focuses on the conversion of a local \u201cdoubting\u201d king. He died around 72 AD and his tomb is located in Mylapore, India.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Matthew<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>One of the four evangelists, Matthew is most well known for his Gospel.\u00a0<strong>He preached to various communities in the Mediterranean before his martyrdom in Ethiopia.<\/strong>\u00a0His tomb is located in the cathedral in Salerno, Italy.<\/p>\n<h3><b>James the Less<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Scholars believe that\u00a0<strong>Saint James the Less authored the \u201cEpistle of St. James\u201d found in the New Testament.<\/strong>\u00a0After the apostles dispersed and left Jerusalem,\u00a0<strong>James remained and became the first bishop in the holy city.<\/strong>\u00a0He remained there for several decades until\u00a0<strong>he was stoned to death<\/strong> by the Jewish authorities in the year 62. Some of his relics can be found in the Basilica Santi Apostoli, in Rome. It is also believed his tomb is located at the St. James Cathedral in Jerusalem.<span class=\"bkreadmore\"><span class=\"text-container-with-image\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Judas Thaddeus<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"css-1q1joro\">\u00a0The \u201cforgotten\u201d apostle due to his name being the same as Judas Iscariot, St. Jude preached the gospel in various places.\u00a0<strong>He is revered by the Armenian Church as the \u201cApostle to the Armenians.\u201d <\/strong><strong>He suffered martyrdom around 65 AD in Beirut, Lebanon.<\/strong>\u00a0His remains are currently in Saint Peter\u2019s Basilica in Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Simon the Zealot<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Simon\u00a0<strong>is often depicted with Judas Thaddeus and some believe they preached together as a team.<\/strong>\u00a0This is due in part because a tradition states they were both martyred in Beirut in the same year. Some of his relics are believed to be located in Saint Peter\u2019s Basilica in Rome.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Matthias<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After being chosen as the \u201creplacement apostle,\u201d\u00a0<strong>one tradition states that Matthias founded a church in Cappadocia<\/strong>\u00a0and ministered to Christians on the coasts of the Caspian Sea.\u00a0<strong>It is believed that he died a martyr\u2019s death<\/strong>, and was beheaded with an axe in Colchis at the hands of the many pagans there.
